With all seven seats in use the boot holds 209 litres, the joint smallest of the 11 van-based MPVs with a published boot figure and 226 litres less than the median. With five seats in use the boot holds 806 litres, rising to a maximum of 1,849 litres.

With every seat in use, 209 litres takes school bags and a food shop. Fold the third row and carwow quotes 806 litres; fold the middle row as well and there are 1,849 litres. Because both rearmost seats lift out, the XL doubles as a load carrier when you need it.

Published figures vary between Citroen, carwow and Auto Express, so compare like with like in our 7-seater boot space guide.

How it is measured carwow figures for the XL: 209 litres with all seven seats in use, 806 with the third row folded and 1,849 with the middle row folded as well; measurement basis not stated. Auto Express quotes 1,050 litres for the XL, and Citroen UK quotes 775 to 4,000 litres for the range without saying which body.

Third row: who fits?

Third row suitsAverage-sized adults

Auto Express finds the third row tighter than the middle one but fine for people of average height or shorter. carwow calls the space decent yet better suited to children, because the raised floor leaves taller passengers sitting knees-up. Access is by sliding and tipping the middle seats forward, and both rearmost seats can be taken out (Auto Express).

Isofix on all three middle-row seats means three child seats can sit side by side, a big help for families with three young children. The catch is access: you reach the third row by sliding and tipping the middle seats, which is harder once child seats are fitted, so the back row suits older children and smaller adults who can manage the climb.

Citroen Berlingo XL verdict: pros and cons

Our verdict The Berlingo XL is one of the cheapest practical 7-seaters, with sliding doors, three Isofix points across the middle row and a third row for average-sized adults. Its Euro NCAP rating has expired, and the electric version has no towing rating.

Pros

  • Isofix on all three middle-row seats
  • Sliding side doors and removable third-row seats
  • Diesel or electric power with seven seats

Cons

  • 209 litres of boot space with all seven seats up
  • Euro NCAP rating from 2018 has expired
  • Electric XL has no towing rating, according to carwow

Good to know

  • Citroen UK sold the Berlingo as an electric-only model from early 2022, brought petrol and diesel back for the five-seat M in May 2023, and Auto Express reported diesel power for the seven-seat XL in August 2025 (Stellantis UK, Motor1, Auto Express)
  • The 110hp petrol engine is offered only in the five-seat M body, so a seven-seat XL is either diesel or electric (Auto Express, Citroen UK)
  • Citroen's configurator quotes up to 205 miles for the electric XL against a 212-mile headline figure for the range, and a 100kW rapid charge from 0 to 80% takes about 30 minutes (Citroen UK)
  • carwow says the electric XL has no towing rating at all, while the electric M is rated at 750kg (carwow)
  • Euro NCAP's four-star result from October 2018 was based on tests of the Peugeot Rifter and expired in January 2025 (Euro NCAP, The Car Expert)

Practicality

Sliding side doors make loading children easier in tight parking bays. Towing is a weak spot: carwow says the electric XL has no towing rating at all, and we could not confirm a figure for the diesel, so check with Citroen before buying a trailer.

The Berlingo's four-star Euro NCAP rating from 2018 has expired, so there is no current score to compare. See other 7-seater MPVs and cheap 7-seater cars.
