Electric 7-seater cars

These are the 7-seater electric cars on sale or coming soon in the UK, ranked by official WLTP range, from long-range SUVs such as the Peugeot E-5008 and Kia EV9 to electric people carriers such as the Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB.

The choice comes down to range against space. The SUVs go furthest on a charge, but most have tight third rows. The van-based models have more room in the back, and the smaller ones cost less, but their ranges are shorter. Each range shown is the official figure, and a few are still provisional.

Range and charging: what the figures mean

Ranges in the list are official WLTP figures, usually for the longest-range version with seven seats. Entry models often go less far: the Peugeot E-5008 covers up to 414 miles with its 97kWh battery but 310 miles with the 73kWh one, and the Kia EV9 drops from 349 miles as an Air to 316 as a GT-Line. Some figures are not final: Kia's 246 miles for the seven-seat PV5 Passenger is a target pending homologation.

Rapid charging varies as much as range. Kia quotes 10 to 80 per cent in 24 minutes for the EV9, the Xpeng X9 needs about 12 minutes on an 800V charger, and Toyota quotes about 45 minutes at 100kW for the Proace Verso Electric. According to electrifying.com, the Mercedes-Benz GLB with EQ Technology needs a paid option to charge properly on 400V rapid chargers.

Electric SUV or electric people carrier

The electric SUVs have the longer ranges, but only the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9 have third rows that reviewers rate for adults. The Peugeot E-5008 suits adults on short trips, the Skoda Peaq and Mercedes-Benz GLB with EQ Technology suit teenagers, and the Volvo EX90 is best for children.

Electric people carriers trade range for room. The Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB and Mercedes-Benz EQV seat adults in the third row, and the smaller Citroen e-Berlingo XL and Peugeot E-Rifter Long suit average-sized adults, with sliding side doors for easier access. Expect official ranges of roughly 200 to 300 miles from this group.

Towing with an electric 7-seater

Check the towing limit before you buy, because it varies hugely. The dual-motor Kia EV9 and four-wheel-drive Hyundai Ioniq 9 are rated at 2,500kg, but the rear-wheel-drive EV9 Air manages only 900kg. Volkswagen rates the ID. Buzz LWB at 1,000kg in Life and Style trims and 1,600kg as a GTX, the Peugeot E-5008 tows 1,000kg, and the Kia PV5 Passenger 750kg, with the top Elite not rated to tow at all. Carwow says the electric Citroen Berlingo XL has no towing rating, and Auto Express says a tow bar cannot be fitted to the Peugeot E-Rifter Long.

Electric 7-seater cars: questions answered

Which of these have a third row that fits adults?
Which electric 7-seater has the longest range?

Of the cars on sale now, the Peugeot E-5008 Long Range has the longest official range, at up to 414 miles. The Mercedes-Benz VLE tops the list on paper, but it is not on sale yet and reported figures conflict: EV Fleet World quotes up to 434 miles, while Fleet News data shows 345. The Skoda Peaq, Hyundai Ioniq 9, Volvo EX90 and Xpeng X9 all quote between 382 and 395 miles.

What is the cheapest electric 7-seater?

The cheapest electric 7-seaters are small van-based people carriers. The Vauxhall Combo Life Electric XL, Citroen e-Berlingo XL and Peugeot E-Rifter Long all cost several thousand pounds less than the cheapest electric SUV, the Peugeot E-5008. Check whether a quoted price includes the UK Electric Car Grant, because price guides do not always say. More budget choices are on our cheap 7-seater cars page.

Which electric 7-seater has the biggest boot?

With all seven seats up, the Mercedes-Benz EQV has 1,030 litres on carwow's figures, and the Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB 306 litres. Among electric SUVs, Peugeot quotes 348 litres for the E-5008, Hyundai 338 for the Ioniq 9 and Kia 333 for the EV9, and the EV9 and Ioniq 9 add a small front boot under the bonnet.

Is the electric version of every 7-seater also a 7-seater?

No. The electric Citroen C3 Aircross and Vauxhall Frontera Electric are sold only with five seats, as is the electric Range Rover, and the shorter versions of the Vauxhall Combo Life and Peugeot E-Rifter are five-seaters too. Kia's PV5 Passenger has seven seats only with the Long Range battery.
