An SUV gives you a high driving position, a choice of four-wheel drive and often a strong towing limit, but in most of them the third row is best kept for children.
Not every version of every SUV here has seven seats: some offer the third row as an option, and several plug-in hybrids are five-seaters. Prices are for the cheapest seven-seat version, and the third-row rating reflects what independent reviewers found in the back.

Seven seats as standard or as an option
Plenty of SUVs sold as 7-seaters have a third row only on some versions, so check the exact car before you order.
- Seven seats on every version: the Kia Sorento, Peugeot 5008, Volvo XC90, Land Rover Discovery and MG MGS9, among others. Every Hyundai Santa Fe has seven too, though the top Calligraphy can be switched to six.
- Third row as an option: the Skoda Kodiaq, BMW X5, Land Rover Discovery Sport and Defender 110, Vauxhall Frontera and Citroen C3 Aircross, among others.
- Seven seats on one version only: the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Nativa trim) and Jaecoo 8 (Luxury trim), while the Nissan X-Trail offers its third row only with four-wheel-drive e-4ORCE.
- Plug-in hybrids sold only with five seats: the Skoda Kodiaq iV, Volkswagen Tayron eHybrid, BMW X5 xDrive50e, Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 e, Land Rover Discovery Sport P270e and Range Rover P460e.
How much boot space a 7-seater SUV leaves
With every seat in use, SUV boot space varies hugely. The Peugeot 5008, Volkswagen Tayron and Skoda Kodiaq quote between 340 and 348 litres, while the Kia Sorento has 179, the Land Rover Discovery Sport 115 and the Citroen C3 Aircross just 40. Hyundai gives no seven-seat figure for the Santa Fe, though carwow found room for three or four carry-on cases. These are the SUVs with the most space behind the third row:

Towing and four-wheel drive
SUVs are the natural choice for towing. The Land Rover Discovery, Range Rover LWB, BMW X5 and X7, Audi Q7 and KGM Rexton are all rated to pull 3,500kg braked, and the Defender 110 manages 3,495kg with seven seats. Limits often depend on the engine: the Kia Sorento tows 2,500kg as a diesel, 2,000kg as a hybrid and 1,700kg as a plug-in hybrid.
Four-wheel drive is standard on the Kia Sorento, Volvo XC90, Mazda CX-80 and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and available on others, including the Skoda Kodiaq and Hyundai Santa Fe hybrid.
