Plug-in hybrid 7-seaters

A 7-seater plug-in hybrid can cover daily driving on electricity and still carry seven people on a long trip using its petrol engine. These are the plug-in hybrid 7-seaters on sale or coming soon in the UK, from the Chery Tiggo 8 and MG MGS9 to the Volvo XC90 T8, with official electric ranges from around 30 miles to more than 90.

Check the seat count before you settle on a model, because several plug-in SUVs, including the Skoda Kodiaq and BMW X5, are sold only as five-seaters. The headline price is not always for the plug-in version, so check its own price on the model page.

Electric range, battery size and charging

The bigger the battery, the further a plug-in hybrid goes on electricity. The Chery Tiggo 9 and Jaecoo 8 share a 34.46kWh battery for 91 and 83 miles respectively, the BYD Ti7 has 35.6kWh for 74 miles, and the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe use 13.8kWh for around 34 miles.

Charging speed matters if you cannot plug in at home. The Chery Tiggo 8, Tiggo 9 and Jaecoo 8 accept DC rapid charging and take about 20 minutes or less from 30 to 80 per cent, and Mitsubishi quotes 32 minutes from 0 to 80 per cent for the Outlander PHEV. The MG MGS9 has no rapid charging at all, so a full charge takes about four hours on a 7.4kW wallbox.

Plug-in hybrids that only seat five

Several SUVs that are 7-seaters with other engines lose the third row in plug-in form, usually because the battery takes its place:

  • Skoda Kodiaq iV: the battery sits under the boot floor, according to Auto Express.
  • Volkswagen Tayron eHybrid: gives up the third row to make room for the battery, says carwow.
  • BMW X5 xDrive50e, Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 e, Land Rover Discovery Sport P270e and Range Rover P460e: five seats only.
  • Audi Q7: Motorpoint reports that the plug-in hybrid due for the new car will stay a five-seater.

The same goes for the Land Rover Defender 110 P300e: Auto Express and carwow list it with five or six seats, and the seven-seat 5+2 layout comes with the diesels instead.

Towing with a plug-in hybrid

Plug-in versions usually tow less than their diesel or hybrid siblings. The Kia Sorento drops from 2,500kg as a diesel to 1,700kg as a plug-in, the Volkswagen Multivan from 2,000kg to 1,600kg, and the Peugeot 5008 Plug-in Hybrid is rated at 1,300kg. The MG MGS9 manages 2,000kg, and leasing data lists the BYD Ti7 at 2,500kg, although BYD had not published its own figure.

Plug-in hybrid 7-seaters: questions answered

Which plug-in hybrid 7-seater has the biggest boot with all seats up?

The Volkswagen Multivan, with 469 litres with all seven seats in use.

Which of these have a third row that fits adults?
Which plug-in hybrid 7-seater has the longest electric range?

Of the cars on sale, the Chery Tiggo 9 has the longest official electric range, at up to 91 miles, followed by the Jaecoo 8 at 83 miles. The Denza D9, which is coming soon, is reported at 130 miles, but Denza had not confirmed which test that figure comes from.

Is a plug-in hybrid 7-seater worth it?

It depends on how you drive. If you can charge at home and most of your trips fit within the electric range, a plug-in hybrid can cover much of its daily mileage on electricity. If you mostly drive long distances or cannot charge, a diesel or self-charging hybrid makes more sense and may tow more: the diesel Kia Sorento is rated at 2,500kg, against 1,700kg for the plug-in.

What is the cheapest plug-in hybrid 7-seater?

The Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid and the MG MGS9 are the cheapest plug-in hybrid 7-seaters on list price. The Tiggo 8's headline price is for its petrol version, so check the Super Hybrid's own price; every MGS9 is a plug-in hybrid. More budget options are on our cheap 7-seater cars page.

What is the best plug-in hybrid 7-seater?

Our pick is the MG MGS9: up to 62 miles of electric range, 332 litres of boot space with all seven seats up, a five-star Euro NCAP rating from 2025 and a seven-year warranty. If you need four-wheel drive or Isofix points in the third row, look at the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe plug-ins, though both have shorter electric ranges. Every category winner is on our best 7-seater cars page.
