7-seater Motability cars

If you are searching for 7-seater Motability cars, start with this list of the cheapest automatic 7-seaters on sale new in the UK, then check each one against the Motability Scheme's own price list. This is not an official Scheme list: which models and versions are offered, and any advance payment, change every quarter.

The Scheme lets people who receive a qualifying mobility allowance exchange it for a leased new car, with insurance, servicing and breakdown cover included. Some cars need an advance payment on top, set separately for each version. Always confirm the exact version, seat count and payment on the current price list before you visit a dealer.

How the Motability Scheme works with a 7-seater

The Motability Scheme is open to people who receive a qualifying mobility allowance, such as the enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment. You exchange the allowance for a leased car, and the package includes insurance, servicing, maintenance and breakdown cover. Some cars also need an advance payment: a one-off amount paid at the start of the lease.

The Scheme price list changes every quarter. A 7-seater with no advance payment one quarter may need one the next, or may leave the list altogether, and only certain trims and engines may be offered. That is why this page lists models to look for rather than Scheme prices: check the current Motability Scheme price list for the exact version before you decide.

What to check if someone has mobility needs

Seat count is only part of the picture. These details make more difference day to day:

  • Door type. Sliding side doors, fitted to van-based models such as the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Life and Ford Grand Tourneo Connect, open without swinging into the next parking space. On the Caddy Maxi Life they open 844mm wide.
  • Step-in height. Kia quotes a 399mm step-in height for the PV5 Passenger. Ask for the figure on any car you are considering.
  • Boot space with all seats in use. If all seven seats are taken, a folded wheelchair or scooter has to fit behind the third row. The Caddy Maxi Life and Grand Tourneo Connect quote 446 litres there, the Citroen C3 Aircross just 40.
  • Third-row access. In the Citroen Berlingo XL you slide and tip the middle seats forward, while in the Chery Tiggo 8 Auto Express found the driver's side the easier way in.

Why the price shown may be for a manual

Some cars in this list are sold with either gearbox, and for those the price shown is the cheapest seven-seat version, which can be a manual. Ask for the automatic by name:

  • Dacia Jogger: the automatic is the Hybrid 155; the TCe 110 petrol is manual.
  • Citroen C3 Aircross: the seven-seat automatic is the Hybrid 145.
  • Vauxhall Frontera: the seven-seat automatics are the Hybrid 110 and Hybrid 145.
  • Citroen Berlingo XL: the 130hp diesel and the electric model are automatic; the 100hp diesel is manual.
  • Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Life: the 2.0 TDI 102 is manual; the 1.5 TSI and 2.0 TDI 122 have a DSG automatic.

Scheme prices are set separately from list prices, so use this list to find candidates, not to estimate an advance payment. Every automatic 7-seater, at any price, is on our automatic 7-seater cars page.

7-seater Motability cars: questions answered

Which automatic 7-seater has the biggest boot with all seats up?

The Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Life and the Ford Grand Tourneo Connect, with 446 litres each with all seven seats in use.

Which of these have a third row that fits adults?

Only the Dacia Jogger.

What is the cheapest automatic 7-seater?

On list prices, the Dacia Jogger Hybrid 155, which starts at £23,330 in Expression trim. The £18,995 shown for the Jogger in the list is for the manual TCe 110, and the headline prices for the Citroen C3 Aircross, Vauxhall Frontera, Citroen Berlingo XL and Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Life are also for manual versions.

For comparison, the cheapest seven-seat Frontera automatic, the Hybrid 110 GS, is listed at £27,925, and the Berlingo XL with the 130hp automatic diesel at £29,995. Scheme terms are set for each version, so look up the automatic you want on the current price list.

Is this an official Motability list?

No. It is our list of the cheapest automatic 7-seaters on sale, by list price. The Motability Scheme publishes its own price list, which changes every quarter and sets which models, trims and engines are available and what advance payment, if any, applies. Check that list for any car you see here.

Do 7-seaters on the Motability Scheme need an advance payment?

Some do and some do not, and the answer can change from one quarter to the next. The advance payment is a one-off amount on top of your allowance, set for each version of each car. Larger and more expensive cars are more likely to need one, so compare several 7-seaters on the current price list.

Are any of these 7-seaters wheelchair accessible?

None of the cars listed here is a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) as standard. WAVs are converted by specialist companies, usually from van-based models, and are listed separately on the Scheme. If a passenger can transfer to a seat, look for sliding doors, a low step-in height and enough boot space for a folded wheelchair with all seats in use.

Can I get an electric 7-seater through Motability?

The Scheme includes electric cars, and several automatic electric 7-seaters appear in this list, including the Vauxhall Combo Life Electric XL, Citroen e-Berlingo XL, Peugeot E-Rifter Long and Kia PV5 Passenger. Whether each is offered this quarter, and on what terms, depends on the current Scheme price list. Every model with its range is on our electric 7-seater cars page.
