Hybrid 7-seater cars

A 7-seater hybrid pairs a petrol engine with an electric motor to cut fuel use, and this list covers every self-charging and plug-in hybrid on sale or coming soon in the UK with seven seats, from the Dacia Jogger Hybrid to the Volvo XC90 and Lexus LM. Mild hybrids, which add only a small electric boost, are not included unless the car also comes as a full or plug-in hybrid.

Several popular SUVs lose their third row in plug-in hybrid form, so they are missing here. Prices are for each car's cheapest seven-seat version, which is not always the hybrid.

Self-charging or plug-in hybrid

A self-charging hybrid has a small battery that the car tops up itself, so you never plug in. The Dacia Jogger Hybrid 155 uses a 1.4kWh battery and the Nissan X-Trail e-Power a 1.73kWh one. Other seven-seat self-charging hybrids include the Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mercedes-Benz GLB and Lexus LM.

A plug-in hybrid has a much bigger battery that you charge from a wallbox or public charger, giving an electric-only range before the engine starts. The MG MGS9 uses 24.7kWh for up to 62 miles, and the Chery Tiggo 9 34.46kWh for up to 91. It suits drivers who can charge at home and mostly make short trips; with a flat battery, it relies on its petrol engine.

Watch the labels, too. Peugeot's launch material describes the 5008 Hybrid 145 as a 48-volt system, and Auto Express classes it as a mild hybrid.

Hybrids that lose their third row

Batteries take up space, and several SUVs drop to five seats in plug-in form: the Skoda Kodiaq iV, Volkswagen Tayron eHybrid, BMW X5 xDrive50e, Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 e, Land Rover Discovery Sport P270e and Range Rover P460e. Motorpoint reports that the plug-in hybrid due for the new Audi Q7 will be a five-seater too.

The Land Rover Defender 110 P300e plug-in hybrid is another: Auto Express and carwow list it with five or six seats, while the seven-seat 5+2 layout comes with the diesels. Every plug-in model that keeps seven seats is on our plug-in hybrid 7-seaters page.

Hybrid 7-seater cars: questions answered

Which of these have a third row that fits adults?
What is the best hybrid 7-seater?

Our pick is the Kia Sorento. Every version has seven seats and all-wheel drive, the self-charging hybrid tows 2,000kg, and there are two Isofix points in the third row. For a plug-in hybrid, the MG MGS9 combines up to 62 miles of electric range with a five-star Euro NCAP rating. See all our best 7-seater cars.

What is the cheapest hybrid 7-seater?

The list above is sorted by price, but the headline price can be for a non-hybrid version. The cheapest Dacia Jogger, for example, is the TCe 110 petrol; the cheapest hybrid Jogger is the Expression Hybrid 155, which still undercuts every other hybrid 7-seater we list. The cheapest plug-in hybrid 7-seaters are the Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid and the MG MGS9.

Can a hybrid 7-seater tow a caravan?

Yes, though hybrid limits are often lower than diesel ones. Kia and Hyundai rate the Sorento and Santa Fe hybrids at 2,000kg, the MG MGS9 manages 2,000kg and the Volvo XC90 up to 2,400kg. The plug-in Sorento and Santa Fe drop to 1,700kg, and the Peugeot 5008 Plug-in Hybrid is rated at 1,300kg. Check the figure for the exact engine on each model page.

Do hybrid 7-seaters have smaller boots?

Only slightly, in most cases. Kia quotes 179 litres with all seven seats up for the Sorento diesel and hybrid and 175 for the plug-in, and Volvo 247 litres for the XC90 B5 against 244 for the T8 plug-in hybrid. The bigger loss is the third row itself, which several plug-in hybrids give up altogether.
