7-seaters with three Isofix points
Three Isofix points do not always mean three child seats side by side. This guide explains Isofix and i-Size, and lists every 7-seater with three or more points and where they sit.
If you need a 7-seater with three Isofix points, check where the points are as well as how many there are. Our data lists 17 current 7-seaters with at least three confirmed Isofix points, but in some of them one point is on the front passenger seat, and in others the points are split between the second and third rows. Only a few take three child seats side by side.
What Isofix and i-Size mean
Isofix fixes a child seat to the car without using the seat belt. RoSPA explains that an Isofix seat has connecting arms that plug into fitting points built into the car when it was made, and describes the system as a more secure and easier way of attaching child seats. Many Isofix seats also use a top tether strap or a support leg that braces against the floor.
i-Size is the newer European regulation for child seats, known as R129. RoSPA says i-Size seats are chosen by the child's height rather than weight, keep babies rear-facing until at least 15 months, and include a side impact test. GOV.UK says only approved height-based seats can be used in the UK, labelled with a capital E in a circle and R129, while approved weight-based seats carry an ECE R44 label.
The legal basics are simple. GOV.UK says children must normally use a child car seat until they are 12 years old or 135cm tall, whichever comes first, and you must switch off the front airbag before fitting a rear-facing baby seat in the front. Isofix itself is not compulsory, but it makes fitting simpler.
Counting points is not the same as fitting three across
"Three Isofix points" on a spec sheet can describe three quite different layouts:
- Three in one row. This is what you need for three Isofix seats side by side. The Citroen Berlingo XL has Isofix on all three second-row seats, Select Car Leasing reports the same for the seven-seat Audi Q9, and the Volkswagen Multivan has three in its third row.
- Two in the back plus the front passenger seat. The Skoda Kodiaq, Skoda Peaq and Volkswagen Tayron count three this way, so only two Isofix seats go in the back.
- Points spread across two rows. The Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe have four: two in the middle row and two in the third. That works for three or four children, as long as the third row is easy to reach with child seats fitted in the middle.
Even three points in one row do not guarantee that three seats will fit. RoSPA warns that Isofix seats will not fit in every car with Isofix points, and three bulky child seats can be too wide for one bench. Check the seat maker's vehicle fitting list, and try all three of your seats in the car before you buy.
Every 7-seater with three or more Isofix points
This list updates from our model data. Only cars with a confirmed count appear, so a model missing here may still have three points that no source we checked has confirmed. Each model page shows exactly which seats have them.

Isofix in the third row
Points in the back row help when older children sit in the middle and a younger one goes behind. The BMW X7 has Isofix on both third-row seats, and the Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB and Kia Sorento have points back there too. Some cars rule it out: Euro NCAP says child seats should not be fitted in the third row of the Peugeot E-Rifter Long, and Auto Express says they cannot be fitted in the Vauxhall Frontera's.
Used people carriers
Several older people carriers have Isofix on all three middle-row seats. The used Ford Galaxy, Ford S-Max and Volkswagen Sharan all do, and the Volkswagen Touran adds two more points in its third row.
If there is no room for a third child seat
GOV.UK covers this situation. A child under 3 must travel in a child car seat, so if there is no room for a third one in the back, that child must sit in the front in the correct seat. A child aged 3 or older can sit in the back using an adult belt. A car that takes three seats in the back means you never have to rely on that rule.
A checklist before you buy
- Find out which seats have the points, not just how many there are.
- Check your child seats against each seat maker's vehicle fitting list.
- Fit all your seats in the car at the dealer, and check that the seat belt buckles can still be reached.
- If the third row will be used, check how passengers get past child seats fitted in the middle row. Sliding doors help: see our 7-seaters with sliding doors.
- Make sure a buggy still fits with all seats up: our 7-seater boot space comparison ranks every model.
