Quick answer

Is the Volkswagen Touran a 7-seater?

Yes. The Mk2 Touran is listed as a seven-seater, with three individual middle-row seats and two in the third row.

Isofix points on all five rear seats make the Touran a strong used buy for young families. The trade-off is a 137-litre boot with seven seats up and a third row that suits adults only on short trips.

Auto Express sees the back row as one for children unless the trip is short, though sliding the middle seats forward frees legroom. Euro NCAP gave it five stars in 2015.

Third row: who fits?

Third row suitsAdults on short trips

Auto Express says the back row is really for children unless the trip is short, though sliding the middle seats forward frees up legroom. carwow reckons most adults under six feet will fit in the two rearmost seats.

Isofix and child seats

5Isofix points

The Touran has five Isofix points: all three middle-row seats and both third-row seats. That is enough for three Isofix child seats, though whether three fit side by side depends on the seats you choose.

Euro NCAP safety rating

5 stars from Euro NCAP, tested in 2015. Ratings from different years are not directly comparable, as the tests get tougher over time.

Buying a used Volkswagen Touran: what to check

  • Auto Express lists four Mk2 recalls, for lighting, airbags and seatbelts, head restraints and sunroof lighting, so check the work was done (Auto Express)
  • Some owners report build glitches and disappointing fuel economy (Auto Express)
  • If you often carry seven people, Auto Express suggests the larger engine, petrol or diesel (Auto Express)
  • carwow counts 10 Touran recalls since launch, mostly in the early years and none since 2020 (carwow)
  • Late cars came only with a 148bhp 1.5 TSI petrol, as the 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesels were dropped (Auto Express)

    LIGHTS MAY FAIL WITHOUT WARNING

It has been identified that due to a programing issue with the On-Board Supply Control Unit it is possible that the failure of one of the vehicle lights (dipped beam/main beam/daytime running light/rear fog light or indicator) may not be recognised by the control unit and therefore not shown in the instrument cluster. It is also possible that vehicle lights may be shown as faulty when they are not. Furthermore a failure of a dipped beam may not trigger a replacement response (activation of side lights). A light failure without a display in the instrument cluster or without replacement response can pose a danger of an accident especially in the dark.

Remedy: Recall all affected vehicles to reprogramme the On-Board Supply Control Unit.

Used Volkswagen Touran FAQs

What years was the Volkswagen Touran sold new in the UK?

2002 to 2025.

How big is the Volkswagen Touran boot with all seven seats up?

137 litres with all seven seats in use, 927 litres with five seats in use and a maximum of 1,857 litres.

How long is the Volkswagen Touran?

The Volkswagen Touran is 4,527mm long (4.53m, 14ft 10in), 1,829mm wide without its mirrors and 1,674mm tall.

How many Isofix points does the Volkswagen Touran have?

Five: all three middle-row seats and both third-row seats.

Can adults sit in the third row of the Volkswagen Touran?

On shorter trips, yes. Over longer distances the third row suits children and teenagers better.

Which used VW Touran engine is best for seven people?

Auto Express suggests the larger engine, petrol or diesel, if you regularly carry seven. The diesels were dropped late in the Touran's life, leaving a 148bhp 1.5 TSI petrol, so a diesel will be an earlier car.

When did Volkswagen stop making the Touran?

Volkswagen's Wolfsburg plant stopped building the Touran at the end of April 2026; production of the first generation began in December 2002. No direct replacement was confirmed in the sources we checked.

For a new Volkswagen with seven seats, see the Tayron SUV, which has seven seats on every version except the plug-in hybrids, and the rest of the Volkswagen 7-seater range.

How does the Touran compare with a Dacia Jogger?

They are close in size: the Touran is 4,527mm long and the new Dacia Jogger 4,550mm. With seven seats up, Auto Express quotes 160 litres of boot space for the Jogger against 137 litres for the Touran, and carwow rates the Jogger's third row as good enough for adults.

The Touran wins on child seats, with five Isofix points to the Jogger's two, and on crash ratings: Euro NCAP gave it five stars in 2015 and the Jogger one star in 2021.
