The Nissan Qashqai 7-seater is the Qashqai+2, revealed in 2008, facelifted in 2010 and sold new until 2014. Auto Express calls its third row cramped, and Parkers says it is not really intended for adults.

Buying a used Nissan Qashqai+2: what to check

  • Auto Express rates Nissan's reliability reputation highly and calls the Qashqai one of its most dependable models (Auto Express)
  • The 1.6 and 2.0 petrol engines are thirsty, so the dCi diesels make more sense for economy (Auto Express)
  • Most models have a five or six-speed manual; the 2.0 petrol could have a CVT and the 2.0 diesel a conventional automatic (Auto Express)
  • Four-wheel drive was offered only with an automatic gearbox, according to Auto Express (Auto Express)

Condition: the youngest cars are now more than ten years old, so check the service history, tyres, brakes and suspension, and walk away from a car with gaps in its record.

REAR RIGHT WHEEL ARCH PROTECTOR MAY DEFORM AND RUB AGAINST AND DAMAGE BRAKE HOSE

In conditions such as high speed and high vehicle loading the rear right wheel arch protector may contact the brake hose. Over time repeated contact could wear through the outer protective cover of the brake hose. This could damage the inner reinforcing braiding and in an extreme case wear a hole in the hose which could lead to brake fluid leakage.

Remedy: On affected vehicles re-work the rear wheel arch protector and if necessary replace the brake pipe with new.

    REAR OXYGEN SENSOR MAY FAIL

If an electrical short occurs in the supply to the rear oxygen sensor the senor will fail but the driver will not see an immediate warning. A MIL warning may display after continued driving depending on driving/vehicle characteristics.

Remedy: Reprogram the ECU to display a warning if the rear oxygen sensor fails.

    TOWBAR MAY DETACH

The bolted joints fixing the towbar kit to the chassis of the vehicle may loosen. In an extreme situation where the vehicle continues to be driven with loose bolted joints the towbar kit may detach from the vehicle.

Remedy: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to inspect and where necessary rework the towbar kit.

    POSSIBLE LOSS OF STEERING

It is possible that the steering wheel boss may not have been produced to the correct specification. If a higher than normal loading is applied to the steering wheel in its normal operation it is possible that the steering wheel boss may separate from the steering column. This can result in a loss of steering control.

Remedy: Recall all affected vehicles to check and if necessary replace the steering wheel assembly.

    FUEL MAY LEAK

The fuel filter hose connector may not be fully connected to the fuel filter. If the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition a fuel leak may occur or in extreme conditions the engine may stall.

Remedy: Recall all affected vehicles and inspect the fuel filter hose connector. If found to be faulty carry out remedial work.

    POWER STEERING ASSISTANCE MAY FAIL

It has been established that the casting for the heat sink on the Electric Power Steering (EPS) control unit may be out of specification. In extreme cases this can cause a failure of the EPS motor which will illuminate a warning light on the dash. Whilst directional control is not affected it is possible that the driver will experience a sudden loss of power assistance.

Remedy: Recall all affect vehicles and replace the EPS control unit.

    LOSS OF STEERING

The cover screw securing the pinion shaft may loosen causing noise during steering operation. Continued use in this condition could result in the screw coming out of the gear housing and in certain circumstances cause a loss of steering control.

Remedy: Recall the potentially affected vehicles to fit a locking plate to the cover screw that secures the pinion shaft.

FUEL MAY LEAK FROM PARTICULATE FILTER

    ENGINE MAY STALL

Remedy: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to replace the a/c compressor and the drive belt and idler roller.

    Built 6 November 2006 to 5 January 2007

  10. 23 June 2008 · Ref R/2008/061 · 9,362 vehicles

    POTENTIAL LOSS OF STEERING

It has been identified that the possibility exists that a needle bearing has been omitted from the steering shaft. Additionally the cover screw may not have been tightened to the correct torque. This may result in the cover screw becoming loose initiating free play and noise within the steering system. Ultimately steering control may be lost.

Remedy: Recalled vehicles will have the steering gear inspected. The steering gear will be replaced should this be found to be necessary.

Used Nissan Qashqai+2 FAQs

What years was the Nissan Qashqai+2 sold new in the UK?

2008 to 2014.

Can adults sit in the third row of the Nissan Qashqai+2?

Not comfortably. The third row is best kept for children.

Is there a 7-seater Nissan Qashqai?

Yes, the Qashqai+2, sometimes written Qashqai Plus 2, sold new from 2008 to 2014. It is slightly longer than the standard Qashqai and every one has seven seats, though the third row suits children. For a new seven-seat Nissan, see the Nissan X-Trail, where seven seats are offered only on the four-wheel-drive e-4ORCE versions.

Which Qashqai+2 engine should I buy?

A dCi diesel, for economy: Auto Express says the 1.6 and 2.0 petrols are thirsty. If you need four-wheel drive, note that Auto Express says it came only with an automatic gearbox.

Is a Qashqai+2 big enough for regular seven-seat trips?

Not really. Auto Express says there is virtually no luggage space with the third row in use, and Parkers says those seats are not really intended for adults. If you will often fill every seat, a used people carrier such as the VW Touran or Ford Galaxy gives more room in the back row and the boot.
