Quick answer

Is the Renault Espace a 7-seater?

Yes. Every Espace IV has seven seats, with five individual removable seats in the back.

A roomy used people carrier, but the youngest cars date from 2012 and Honest John lists several costly faults. Buy on condition and history.

The Renault Espace 7-seater covered here is the Espace IV, the last Espace sold in the UK. Renault withdrew it in February 2012, and the fifth-generation car that followed in 2015 was built only in left-hand drive.

With all seven seats in place, Honest John lists 291 litres of boot space. A flat load floor means taking seats out, which Auto Express says is heavy, awkward work, and the costly faults Honest John lists involve the diesel engines and automatic gearboxes.

With all seven seats in use the boot holds 291 litres, 45 litres more than the median for the 4 new MPVs, on sale or coming soon, with a published boot figure. The maximum load space is 3,050 litres.

How it is measured Espace IV. Honest John lists 291 to 3,050 litres; the top figure needs the rear seats taken out, as they do not fold into the floor.

Compare the Espace with other cars

Third row: who fits?

All five rear seats lift out individually, but Auto Express says they are heavy and awkward to remove. They do not fold into the floor, so a flat load area means taking them out.

Euro NCAP safety rating

5 stars from Euro NCAP. Ratings from different years are not directly comparable, as the tests get tougher over time.

Buying a used Renault Espace: what to check

  • Diesels can suffer EGR valve and turbo bearing failures, as well as injector faults (Honest John)
  • Automatic gearboxes have given trouble, including fractured ATF coolers (Honest John)
  • Digital dashboard failures are reported, with a replacement costing about £800 (Honest John)
  • Steering lock failures and driveshaft bearing noise are also listed (Honest John)
  • Auto Express picks the 2.0 dCi diesel, the best seller, as the engine to choose (Auto Express)

The safest choice: a 2.0 dCi with a manual gearbox, ideally with invoices for recent work on the EGR valve, turbo and injectors.
