BMW 7-seater cars

A new BMW 7-seater means the X7, which has seven seats as standard, or the X5, where a third row is an optional extra on the xDrive30d, xDrive40d and M60i. The X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid cannot have seven seats, so every new seven-seat BMW is a diesel or petrol SUV with mild hybrid assistance.

The difference shows in the back row. Reviewers say the X5's optional seats are really for children, and they have no Isofix mounts, while Drive found even tall adults comfortable in the X7's third row. For a used BMW seven-seater, the 2 Series Gran Tourer MPV sold from 2015 to 2021 has seven seats as standard.

Which BMW 7-seater should you choose?

Pick the BMW X7 if the third row will be used often. It is 5,181mm long, has Isofix on both third-row seats as well as the outer middle-row seats, and Auto Express and Drive quote 326 litres of boot space with all seven seats up. A six-seat layout with two middle-row chairs is optional and makes the back row easier to reach.

The BMW X5 is shorter at 4,935mm and treats its third row as occasional space for children. No source we checked gives its boot space with all seven seats up, and carwow says a seven-seat X5 has 575 litres with the third row folded against 650 litres in a five-seater, so the extra seats cost some luggage room even when folded away.

BMW UK rates every seven-seat X5 and X7 engine to tow 3,500kg. A fifth-generation X5 is due in spring 2027, and BMW UK's page for it mentions room for up to five adults with no word on a third row, so check before you order if you need seven seats.

BMW 7-seater questions

How many 7-seaters does BMW sell in the UK?

Two: the BMW X5 and the BMW X7.

Does BMW make a 7-seater?

Yes. The X7 has seven seats as standard, with a six-seat option, and the X5 can be ordered with a third row on its xDrive30d, xDrive40d and M60i versions. The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer, a seven-seat MPV sold new from 2015 to 2021, is a used alternative.

Is there a hybrid BMW 7-seater?

Every X5 and X7 engine offered with seven seats has mild hybrid assistance, but the X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid is sold only as a five-seater. It offers up to 64 miles of electric range and a smaller 500-litre boot. For a plug-in hybrid with a third row, compare our plug-in hybrid 7-seaters.

Which BMW 7-seater is best for adults in the third row?

The X7. Drive says even tall adults can travel comfortably in its back row and carwow praises the thigh support, although Auto Express finds the high floor makes climbing in awkward. The X5's optional third row is best kept for children, and carwow says the space is smaller than in a Land Rover Discovery.
